Preface for Procedings of The 10th International Conference on Atomically Controlled Surfaces,Interfaces and Nanostructures (ACSIN-10)

This collection of papers in e-Journal of Surface Science and Nanotechnology contains the proceedings of the 10th International Conference on Atomically Controlled Surfaces, Interfaces and Nanostructures (ACSIN-10) held in the Conference Center of Granada (Spain) from 21 to 25 September, 2009. This Conference aimed to provide an opportunity for international discussion on new concepts, techniques and applications of atomically controlled processes at surfaces, interfaces and nanostructures. The scope of ACSIN-10 included the following subjects: Aromatic and Biomimetic Organic Arrays; Atomic and Molecular Manipulation; Characterization and Instrumentation; Electronic Transport; Graphene; Mechanics, Fracture and Nanostructures; Nano-Biotechnology; Nano-Electronics and Molecular-Based Devices; Nano-Magnetism; Nano-Photonics; Nanoparticles and Clusters, Nanotubes and Fullerenes; Organic Thin Film Devices; Oxides; Reaction and Dynamics; Scanning Probe Microscopy; Self-assembly of functional molecules; Surface/Interface Electronic Properties; Surface/Interface Structural Properties; Surface Microscopy; and Thin Film Growth and Applications. A total of 360 delegates attended the Conference, which comprised 5 Plenary and 28 Invited Lectures, 213 oral and 140 poster contributions, selected from 407 abstracts submitted. These Proceedings contain articles based on contributions presented at the Conference.

The ACSIN Prize for the best student paper presented at the Conference was sponsored this year by the Universidad Autonoma de Madrid and was granted to Bin Wang from Ecole Normale Superieure de Lyon, Universite de Lyon and CNRS (France).

The Nanoscience Prize was sponsored by the Universidad Autonoma de Madrid as well, and it was awarded to Walter de Heer “for his visionary work in developing the field of graphene nanoscience and nanotechnology”. Walter de Heer is currently professor at the School of Physics of the Georgia Institute of Technology (USA).

ACSIN-10 received support from Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovacion (Spain), Universidad Autonoma de Madrid (Spain), Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas (CSIC, Spain), American Vacuum Society (AVS, USA), the City of Granada and the regional government of Andalusia. The Organizing Committee gratefully acknowledges all these contributions.

We would like to thank all members of the International Advisory Committee for their work in the selection process of contributed papers and in setting up the list of Plenary and Invited talks. We also thank all referees for their fast and thorough work. We thank specially Prof. Soukiassian, Chair of the International Advisory Committee, for his help and support in many different aspects of the organization of the Conference.

The Guest Editors of this collection of proceedings papers are J. J. de Miguel, A. Mugarza, M. A. Valbuena, A. Mascaraque, L. Perez and E. G. Michel.
