About ALC The series of international
symposia entitled "Atomic Level Characterizations
(ALC)" commenced in 1996 with the event in Kyoto,
Japan under the auspices of the 141st Committee on
Microbeam Analysis of Japan Society for the Promotion of
Science (JSPS). The ALC symposia focus on practical
applications of the atomic level characterization of new
materials and devices. Applications of and
instrumentation for various analytical techniques for
surface and interface analysis are therefore within the
scope of these symposia, leading to the possibility of
stimulating discussion among researchers who are
intimately involved with analysis by different probe
methods. The fundamental problems to be solved for
further development of the atomic level characterization
of materials are also covered, including theoretical and
simulational approaches to this science. |

Venue and Date ALC'05 will be held at the Outrigger Keauhou Beach Resort, Kailua-Kona, Big Island, Hawaii, U.S.A., from December 04 (Sun) to December 09 (Fri), 2005, with the support of the 141st Committee on Microbeam Analysis of Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS). Hawaii island is called "The Big Island" and is blessed with some of the most breathtaking landscapes and sights that Hawaii can offer. |

The resort sits the Kona Coast and features 10 acres of oceanfront properties. On the hotel grounds, you can also find petroglyphs, the foundations of two ancient temples, and a replica of King Kalakaua's summer cottage. |

Accommodation All participants will be housed at the Outrigger Keauhou Beach Resort, which offers several classes of guest rooms each of which has a choice of one king or two double beds. For the symposium, you may select:
All rates are subject to Hawaii
state taxes and visitor's fees that add 11.4166% to the
bill. Rates are based on single or double occupancy. The
charge for an extra adult is $20.00 per night. There is
no charge for children under 18 years of age, when
sharing accommodations with adults/parents, see on the
hotel reservation form on the conference website. |

Climate The "Big
Island" of Hawaii has a mild and temperate climate,
relatively free from uncomfortable extremes. In the
winter, the temperatures average in the low-70's (21C) and mid-70's (23C) in the summer. The warm,
tropical rain falls primarily at night and helps to make
the island a lush, green community with fresh air and
many waterfalls. |

Student Awards A limited number of awards (within 5) are available for students. To apply for the student award, the letter of application (any format) and the recommendation letter (any format) from the supervisor must be attached to the abstract. The deadline and the submission address are the same as those of the regular abstract. The committee will inform the decision before September. The award will be 50,000 Japanese Yen (JPY) per person, only available at the registration desk. Note that the students who get award should pay the registration fee. The winner should give a
short oral presentation (5 min) and should also submit a
manuscript to the proceedings (Surface and Interface Analysis). The list of the Student Awards Winner |

Travel Support for Young
Scientists A limited number of partial travel support is available for researchers under 40 years old. Only those who are accepted for paper presentation and have financial difficulty in traveling will be considered for the support. The following guidelines must be met:
The notification of the reception will be sent by e-mail to the corresponding author within 3 working days. If you do not receive any response within 5 days to your abstract e-mail submission, please contact alc05-abstract@isc.osakac.ac.jp. Finalists receive reimbursement of travel expenses up to 100,000 Japanese Yen (JPY) in cash, only available at the registration desk. |
